Justine Wuebold is returning to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Embedding Sustainability in Cultural Heritage Conservation Education Initiative at the UCLA/Getty Interdepartmental Program in Conservation of Cultural Heritage as our Research Facilitator. Justine is also currently Program Manager on another of our NEH grant projects, Preservation of Indigenous Collections and Cultural Resources. Read more about this project here. Wuebold is a collections manager by training, who holds a dual Master’s in Museum Studies and Business Administration from John F. Kennedy University. She has worked in museums and cultural heritage for ten years, with specialized knowledge in collections care, conservation and green museum practices.

Over the course of the project, which has been funded for three more years, Wuebold will coordinate activities between UCLA faculty, Getty Conservation Institute scientists, and an outside advisory board to research and analyze barriers against integrating sustainability in conservation and its educational institutions. The subject is informed by our Phase I research and survey data, which found that many respondents face opposition or institutional resistance toward incorporating sustainability into their work. Wuebold will assist in developing methods for mitigating sustainability barriers and arranging focus groups to discuss and test these methods. This analysis will aid in developing modular materials and resources for our program, which we would make available as open-access content for other educators making similar updates to their teaching methods.
