POSITION DESCRIPTION
The UCLA/Getty Interdepartmental Program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for lecturer positions to teach the following courses during the Spring quarter, 2022. The quarter begins on March 23 and ends on June 10. These appointments also provides opportunities for interaction with colleagues, laboratory facilities and research infrastructure at UCLA and the Getty Villa. Through its collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute, as a unit in the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, and located in the UCLA Fowler Museum, the Conservation Program is part of a vibrant center of archaeological and cultural scholarship.
CLT HTG C120/C220 Field Methods in Archaeological Conservation: Readiness, Response & Recovery
Overview of risks (direct and indirect) and materials vulnerability of in situ cultural heritage and movable archaeological materials in emergency situations (rescue excavations, disasters, conflicts), with emphasis on readiness, first aid response, and recovery. Readiness focuses on preparedness and preventive measures, including reburials, shelters, rescue excavations, and documentation as well as developing inventories and awareness campaigns. First aid response covers development of on-site emergency risk assessments to evaluate damage and putting triage theory into practice, salvage rescue operations, emergency temporary in situ stabilization and protection (using locally available materials), and training. Recovery is based on documentation, lifting methods, handling, transportation, and storage. Emphasis on finding practical solutions to prevent and mitigate damage and to recover and safeguard archaeological artifacts.
CLT HTG 239 Conservation Laboratory: Metals II
Treatment of conservation problems of metallic artifacts made of iron, steel, cast iron, zinc, and aluminum that have some importance in ethnographic objects. Practical work on metallic artifacts.
Appointments will be at the lecturer level and will be located in Los Angeles, unless we are required to teach them remotely. Duties include preparation and delivery of lectures and laboratory practical sessions and supervision of conservation treatments related to the course taught.
Candidates should hold a graduate degree in conservation from a recognized academic institution, with at least five years of experience in the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic materials. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous academic teaching experience both in delivering theoretical lectures and seminars and developing and supervising object treatments in the laboratory.
